Saratoga County District Attorney Karen A. Heggen announces that Jose A. Colon (DOB 12/16/1969) pled guilty in Saratoga County Court to Robbery in the Second Degree, a Class “C” Violent Felony in violation of New York State Penal Law Section 160.10(2)(a), in connection with a May 15, 2023 robbery on Caroline Street.

The Defendant admitted under oath to punching a man and forcibly stealing his wallet following a late-night attack in downtown Saratoga Springs.  The victim was rushed to Saratoga Hospital where he was treated for a concussion and several lacerations to his face.

The subsequent investigation by the Saratoga Springs Police Department soon located and seized numerous surveillance videos and items of physical evidence that were critical to the People’s case.  Members of the Saratoga Springs Police Department’s Investigations Division quickly developed a suspect, placed him in custody that same day, and returned the stolen property to the victim.

“I want to thank both the Saratoga Springs Police Department and the business owners on Caroline Street for their continued cooperation in overcoming the rise in crime in downtown Saratoga Springs,” said Heggen. “The fact that within a few hours we had a suspect in custody, an overwhelming collection of incriminating surveillance footage, and a healing victim with his property returned to him demonstrates how resilient a community we can be if business owners and law enforcement face this challenge together.”

The fifty-three (53) year-old Defendant is scheduled to be sentenced to ten (10) years in State Prison followed by two-and-a-half (2.5) years of post-release supervision on October 16, 2023. A Full Stay Away Order of Protection in favor of the victim will be issued by the Court at that time.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Joseph Frandino together with District Attorney Investigator Jack Barney.
